The Estate
8.5 beachfront acres
8.6 beachfront acres, in one piece, from the highway to the water
Pākalā is 8.6 acres, beachfront, running in one piece from Kaumualiʻi Highway to the shoreline. That is the plain fact of it. The feel of it is something else.
the approach
The entry is narrow where it leaves the highway, and it travels a long way before anything opens. Mature trees and palms gather in close around the drive. The house comes into view in pieces before it comes into view whole, a line of roof first, then a run of white railing through the foliage, and only then the full low length of the building. There is real distance to cover before you reach it.
The house from the water, low among the trees. From here the ground runs back 8.6 acres to the highway.
the ocean side
On the ocean side, the land opens again. Broad lawn runs from the lānai out to a low wall of stacked lava rock, and past the wall, the shoreline, the reef, the Pacific, Niʻihau on the horizon. The trees hold their shade and their scale close around the house and leave the view to the west open.
Walk out toward the shoreline and look back. The house that felt substantial from the lānai reads differently from the makai side, a long low structure standing among trees, the land taking the larger role.
The estate holds more than the main residence. A caretaker's cottage. A garage and storage building. Established grounds that have had a century to grow into what they are now. Each has its place on one run of land, highway to shoreline.
